Read-a-thon

Today, we had a special visit from the Golf Cardinal to help promote the PTA's Read-a-thon. Keep reading third graders!

Special Guests

Our Monarch presentations are beginning this moth! This year, Jessie Bond, from the Morton Grove Public Library will be coming in monthly to present the Monarch Award nominees to third graders. ("The name Monarch was chosen because of its familiarity to K-3 children and to symbolize the growth, change, and freedom that becoming a reader brings. The Monarch is designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with children's books, authors, and illustrators. The program is open to all K-3 age children in Illinois. For more information, click here. Students will vote in March, and their votes will count!

Second Text Set: Family Traditions

Our next reading text set is on the importance of family traditions. Students have been sharing their favorite family traditions. Each child chose one of their favorite family traditions and wrote a detailed description of it. Then, students illustrated their traditions and we created a class quilt to share how important family is to all of us!

First Text Set: Kindness

We just finished our first Reading text! All 5 mentor texts had a theme of kindness. To wrap up the text set, I re-asked our guiding question for this text set: Why is it important to be kind to others? Students wrote done on a leaf how they have been kind to others and/or how others have been kind to them. As a class, we put our thoughts on a kindness tree!

4 Types of Sentences

The third graders have been learning about the four common types of sentences: declarative (statements), interrogative (questions), exclamatory (exclamations), and imperative (commands)! They have been identifying and punctuating these sentences and creating their own examples. Students were given a random picture and they had to write 4 sentences about the photo (statement, question, exclamation, and command). Ask your child about the sentence project!
