March & April Update

Over the past couple weeks, the third graders have been stuck on magnets.  We have done many different experiments and activities to learn all about magnetism.  Using several Mystery Science lessons, the children have used different magnets in different ways to explore their many properties.  They’ve made magnets float by having them repel each other.  They’ve used the property of attraction (and just a little bit of string) to make paper clips “fly”.  They even used magnetism to create locks for secret doors that can only be unlocked from the outside using a magnet.  The third graders are currently completing our final unit project, which is a STEM kit called “Squeaky Clean Magnets”.  In this project, the children are working in engineering teams to build a prototype for a fish tank cleaner.  This sounds simple enough, but they need to design it so that the cleaner can clean deep inside the fish tank without needing to stick your arm inside the water or emptying the tank.  How can they do this?  Hint: Magnets!  It should be fun to see the amazing designs they come up with!
